Like "The Cottage", Woody Bay, La Retraite really is a 'hideaway'. Situated ½ mile down a 'no through' road (directly overlooking the Bristol Channel and leading to the beach) with almost no passing traffic, it is surrounded by National Trust Woodland where fallow and red deer are frequent visitors. There are superb views of the coastline from above the bay and, for keen walkers, the South West Coast Path is close by. The rocky cove at Woody Bay, reputed haunt of smugglers and which has a sandy beach at low tide, is a 10 minute walk further down the lane, while the famous valley of the Rocks is a short distance to the east.
La Retraite is excellently placed for a wide variety of outdoor pursuits
with horse riding, sea, lake and fly-fishing, golf (Saunton Sands and
Ilfracombe) and surfing (Croyde Bay and Woolacombe) all on offer. Exmoor
(smallest but one of the most beautiful of England's National Parks) rises
behind the rocky cliffs, with its moors, streams and famous Lorna Doone
associations. Local village amenities are available at Lynton & Lynmouth
(approx. 5 miles), the historic market town of Barnstaple is 16 miles
and the seaside resort of Minehead 20 miles.
