South Devon
Let us take you on a tour of our beautiful corner of South Devon... we will find wild and majestic scenery up on Dartmoor, historic villages and secluded creeks hidden away along the River Dart and quaint seaside towns where there are beaches to build sand castles, boats to hire, or fresh fish to buy for your supper. There are cottages waiting to offer your best holiday ever in all of these special places, memories waiting to be made, and colourful holiday photos waiting to be taken.
The River Dart flows through this magical region, starting life as a stream trickling through boggy mires before growing to leap down rocky waterfalls to the ancient market town of Totnes. A town full of historic interest with narrow streets dominated by the castle and church tower. A lively market takes place every Friday and Saturday, with delicious local produce on offer at the farmers market held on the last Saturday of every month. From Totnes the river flows gently past Dittisham until it reaches the sea at Dartmouth; here you will find unique shops and gourmet restaurants, historical buildings and a bustling river front. Take the water taxi out to the castle and see Bayard Cove where the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from and Warfleet Creek where ships gathered to fight the Armada.
Before leaving the moor the river curves round towards the Stannary town of Ashburton which dates from Saxon times. Walking and pony trekking are on your doorstep with canoeing and fishing not far away.
Sweeping on towards Dartmouth, the river runs past Dittisham – an ancient village built on it's banks, surrounded by woods and glorious countryside where families return year safer year for their children to learn to sail or go crabbing from the dinghy pontoon or have picnics on The Ham.
Hidden nearby in it's own little valley is the village of Cornworthy, with it's wonderful pub The Hunters Lodge and the remains of a gatehouse of an Augustinian priory dating from 1231.
Sitting on the edge of Start Bay where the River Dart runs into the sea is the fishing village of Beesands, unchanged for many years with local fishermen still halting their boats off the beach. You can buy scrumptious fresh crab sandwiches and lobster dishes in 'The Cricket', just 25 yards from the sea. Half a mile inland is the farming village of Beeson, surrounded by three farms which have been owned by the same families for generations.
If you don't see everything on your first holiday, our enchanting corner of Devon will always be waiting to welcome you back to it's peace and tranquility at any time.
Out and About in South Devon
Here in South Devon the countryside is wonderful for walking, with miles of the South West Coastal Footpath, the Dart Valley Trail linking Dartmouth, Dittisham and Totnes, the nature reserve at Slapton Ley, and not forgetting the dramatic expanse of Dartmoor. Whatever time of year you choose to visit, the scenery will not be disappointing.
There are lovely beaches to choose from: Blackpool Sands is a favourite for families, with quieter beaches along the coast at Slapton Sands and Beesands.
The ancient village of Dittisham surrounded by glorious countryside and the river running by makes a lovely spot for a holiday at any time of year. The dinghy pontoon on the quay will provide children with endless fun crabbing, and just along the riverbank is The Ham, an open green space with swings and lots of room for flying kites, playing ball or having a picnic. There are two wonderful pubs – the Ferry Boat inn right on the quay or the Red Lion up in the heart of the village.
Whilst you are here there are some great days out to be had: for garden lovers the National Trust has many properties on offer including Coleton Fishacre at Kingswear with it's art deco interior and wonderful garden, the newly acquired gardens of Greenway House, once home of Agatha Christie – just a short ferry ride from Dartmouth. For the more adventurous the fascinating Eden Project in Cornwall is perfectly reachable in a day.
Children will love the thrills and spills of the Woodlands Leisure Park between Dartmouth and Totnes, with it's water coasters and toboggan run, fabulous even on a rainy day with the UK's largest indoor venture centre. Pennywell Farm at Buckfastleigh and the Miniature Pony and Animal Farm at Moretonhampstead on Dartmoor are perfect for animal lovers.
Those of you who like the nostalgia of yesteryear will enjoy the local steam railways – the Dart Valley Railway from Kingswear to Paignton and the South Devon Railway from Totnes to Buckfastleigh – why not make a full day out and visit Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary, and Buckfast Abbey with it's thousand years of history.
