There is only really one way to discover Crownhill
Fort and that is to visit it for yourself! Crownhill Fort is only
open on SELECT DAYS throughout the year. It caters primarily for
all types of Educatinal, Private and Corporate events. Guided tours
are available on most weekdays throughout the year for pre-booked
groups.
Plymouth's Best Kept Secret - Most people hardly notice Crownhill
Fort as they go past, it is so well hidden from the outside world,
and that was exactly the intention when it was built in the 1860s.
However, with its massive earth ramparts, hidden gun emplacements
and tunnels, it is a place that, once discovered, you will not forget
in a hurry.
Crownhill Fort may look like a green and wooded hill but it was
once a formidable fighting machine - the largest and most important
of the great Victorian forts built to defend Plymouth from attack
by land as well as sea.
Today it is equally important, as the only large work of its kind
to survive unaltered.

Children will love the seeing all parts of the Fort
and the rabbit warren of passages and tunnels just waiting to be discovered
and explored. There are four fighting levels and 32 gun positions,
many containing real working cannon.
You can learn the story of the Fort, climb the ramparts and admire
the far-reaching views or marvel at the deep outer ditch, dug by
hand from solid rock.
The Fort's buildings contain displays where you can experience a
soldier's life in the re-created Victorian and WWII barrack rooms,
Victorian sergeant's quarters and guard room.
There is a daily gun firing on the parade ground at 1.30pm, Victorian
costumes to dress up in and audio presentations through the tunnels
truly bringing the Fort back to life. To recover from all the excitement,
relax in the Retreat Café with a coffee and Danish pastry or perhaps
re-fuel yourself for the afternoon with something from the delicious
and ever changing lunch menu. Crownhill Fort really is a unique
adventure playground for all ages.
The Fort has free car parking, tearoom and toilet
facilities and is in part accessible for visitors with disabilities
who are allowed to park within the Fort.
