Property description
  • last castle to be built in Britain
  • elegant interiors designed by Lutyens
  • spectacular views and walks

This extraordinary granite castle, perched on a Dartmoor crag, was built between 1910 and 1930 for self-made millionaire, Julius Drewe. Architect Sir Edwin Lutyens skilfully combined a medieval atmosphere, created by bare granite, exposed timbers and tapestry-hung walls, with comfortable and stylish rooms fitted with the latest conveniences of the day. These included central heating and elaborately appointed bathrooms.

The delightful formal garden has colour throughout the season, with azaleas and rhododendrons followed by roses and herbaceous borders. A huge circular croquet lawn can be used by visitors (equipment for hire). The grounds give magnificent views over the surrounding countryside and delightful walks can be enjoyed into the wooded gorge of the River Teign.

Castles and fortified buildings:

Battered walls, stylised crenellations and expanses of mullioned-and-transomed windows combine to create a romantic austerity, echoing the Middle Ages and foreshadowing the Modern Movement.

Chapels and churches:

Church with low vaulting and bellfry.

Architecture: Fine example of an Edwardian house

This extraordinary granite castle, with its deliberate ‘made to look old’ atmosphere, was constructed between 1910 and 1930 for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe. The sought-after architect Edwin Lutyens was responsible for skillfully marrying a medieval look of bare granite, exposed timbers and tapestry-hung walls with comfortable and stylish rooms. Castle Drogo is proof that appearances can deceive, as it was built with the very latest ‘mod cons’ of the day, such as central heating and elaborately appointed bathrooms.
